Rider Wins Bucknell Invitational

LEWISBURG, PA—The Broncs led from start to finish, winning the 54-hole Bucknell Invitational for the program’s third title in the last three years. “We did great, winning the tournament by 16 strokes,” said first-year head coach Bob Whartenby. “I’m very proud of the guys.  They really stuck together and played great golf all weekend.”

Rider junior Tyler Brewington (Orangeville, Pa./Benton) was the medalist, shooting a 72 on Saturday for a three-round total of 211. Brewington shot a 70 and a 69 on Friday. “Tyler’s return meant a lot,” said Whartenby. “Getting a solid player back into the line up, the rest of the team feels more relaxed.  You know he’s going to come in with a good score. I felt once Tyler got back it would make the other players play better. It just brings the best out of everybody.”

Junior Dylan Maxey (Montrose, Pa./Montrose Area) finished second overall with a three-round total of 212, shooting a 70 on Saturday after firing a 70 and a 72 on Friday. “Dylan was consistent all weekend, making putts, making great shots, and he never got himself in trouble,” said Whartenby.

“Everybody got a good week of practice in and I had a good feeling coming in,” said Maxey. I knew I had to bounce back from a poor showing last weekend. Having Tyler back in the line up really helped the team out. We were a lot stronger team overall. Everybody played solid this weekend, and that is what it takes to win a tournament. I hit a lot of greens today, maybe 16, and my irons were solid all weekend.”

Junior Josh Krumholz (Reading, Pa./Gov. Mifflin) finished seventh among the 83 golfers with a 214, after a 73 on Saturday. Krumholz shot a 70 and a 71 on Friday.

Junior Pat Rutter (Wyomissing, Pa./High Point) had a 72 on Saturday to round out the scoring for the Broncs.

Sophomore Eric LeFante (Colts Neck, N.J.) shot a 79 and a 70 on Friday but was forced to withdraw on Saturday.

“We’re a much stronger team this year, so I just have to keep myself in the top of my game,” said Maxey. “We’re all after each other, we all want to beat each other. I just want to keep finishing in the top 10, top five, maybe even win one this year. I had a chance to win this one, only lost by one stoke, but I don’t mind losing to a teammate. I’m just as happy that Tyler won it as I would have been if I won it.”

Rider competes in the Cornell Invitational September 29-30. “I’m really happy about this victory, thrilled, and looking forward to next weekend, maybe win two in a row,” said Whartenby.
