Men’s College Golf – Colgate Invitational
Rider 12th of 17

HAMILTON, NYAfter finishing third in 2004 and ninth in 2005, the Broncs competed at the Colgate Invitational over the weekend, finishing 12th of 17 teams after shooting a 313 on Sunday.

The Broncs shot 317 on Saturday finishing with a two-day total of 630.

“It was another frustrating day,” said first-year head coach Bob Whartenby.  “We were more relaxed than yesterday but there were a few shots where we just didn’t execute like we know how to.”

“It’s a tough thing to deal with that you can shoot well for 16 holes and let one or two holes get away and post a big score," Whartenby added.  "There’s a certain mental toughness that we need to get better with and that will come.  We’re young.  Only one player had ever shot this course before and at times it showed over the weekend.  We just have to work harder.”

The Broncs were playing without junior Tyler Brewington (Orangeville, Pa./Benton) the top returning letterwinner who is out with an injury.  Whartenby is hoping to have Brewington back this coming weekend at Bucknell.

“Having Tyler out there pumps the rest of the team up,” said Whartenby.  “He is very charismatic, lead by example with the way he plays and we missed that this weekend.”

Whartenby was recognized as one of the most mentally tough golfers ever to pass through the Rider program and his goal is to install that toughness in his players.

“One of my strengths was to battle through the tough shots and situations,” Whartenby added.  “Being so close in age to the current players, I remember the things that they are going through, the pressures of the match, the pressures of being a student-athlete and as we go along, I will be able to help them make those adjustments so one hole or one errant shot doesn’t wreck what otherwise is a good round.”

Junior Josh Krumholz (Reading, Pa./Gov. Mifflin) shot the low round for the Broncs on Sunday with two over par 74 after carding a 75 on Saturday to finish with a 149, good for a seventh place tie out of 85 golfers at the par 72 Seven Oaks Golf Course.

“I don’t we played as well as we could have,” said Krumholz, the only Bronc that had played the Seven Oaks course.  “We just need to get it going and play better.”

Krumholz finished 39th in this tournament as a sophomore shooting a 157 and carded a 153 to finish 25th when the Broncs were third as a team his freshman year.

“I think having Tyler [Brewington] out played a role but not a big one,” Krumholz added.  “We, as a team just need to go out and shoot some good rounds and get some momentum going into Bucknell.  Some of the guys just need to get their confidence back.  We have the ability to play better, we just need to execute some better shots.”

Junior Patrick Rutter (Wyomissing, Pa/High Point) shot a 79 and had a total of 152 to finish 20th.

Also for the Broncs, sophomore Eric LeFante (Colts Neck, N.J.) shot a 79 for a two-day total of 163 finishing in 67th place.  Junior Dylan Maxey (Montrose, Pa./Montrose Area) shot an 81, scoring a 167 for the weekend to finish 77th with senior Jeff Palmer (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) adding an 84 for a tournament total of 169 to finish tied for 78th.

The Broncs tee-off again at the Bucknell Invitational Friday and Saturday.
