Rider’s Juska Honored by MAAC
LAWRENCEVILLE—Rider University sophomore Mike Juska was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Week for all games played the first week of the season.
Juska (Wall) scored two goals on Sunday to give Rider a 2-1 victory at La Salle. Juska, who scored three goals as a Rider rookie last season, took a pass from senior Tim Jones (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) and scored in the 35th minute of the game, and then scored on a free kick from 25 yards out 10 minutes into the second half for a 2-0 Rider lead.
“Juska played a great game on Sunday,” said Rider head coach Russ Fager. “He was everywhere he was supposed to be. He had a lot of great shots.”
“Against La Salle we came out dominating the first half,” said Juska. “We controlled the ball.”
Juska broke a 0-0 tie with 10 minutes left in the first half. “Jones passed the ball to me through two defenders, a 50-50 ball with me and the goalkeeper. I won it and pushed it in,” Juska said. “The second goal AJ (Parillo) made a nice run and was fouled at the 25 yard mark. We were awarded a free kick. I was able to bend it into the near post. That was my first free kick goal. We’ve been working on that a lot in practice, so it was nice that if paid off. Taking a 2-0 lead was great. It really gave us a nice cushion to work with.”
Rider began the season 1-0-1 after tying Richmond 1-1 on Friday in the season opener. The Broncs travel to Monmouth Tuesday before hosting Longwood on Friday, September 1 at 4:00 pm.
