PHILADELPHIA, PA—Sophomore Mike Juska (Wall) scored two goals to give Rider a victory at La Salle Sunday.  The Broncs begin the 2006 season 1-0-1, with both decisions coming against Atlantic-10 teams. “1-0-1 against a pair of Atlantic 10 teams is a nice way to start the season,” said Rider head coach Russ Fager.

Juska, who scored three goals as a Rider rookie last season, took a pass from senior Tim Jones (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) and scored in the 35th minute of the game, and then scored on a free kick from 25 yards out 10 minutes into the second half for a 2-0 Rider lead.

“Juska played a great game,” Fager said. “He was everywhere he was supposed to be. Had a lot of great shots.”

“We came out dominating the first half,” said Juska.  “We controlled the ball.  About 35 minutes into the game Jones passed the ball to me through two defenders, a 50-50 ball with me and the goalkeeper. I won it and pushed it in. The second goal AJ (Parillo) made a nice run and was fouled at the 25 yard mark. We were awarded a free kick. I was able to bend it into the near post. That was my first free kick goal. We’ve been working on that a lot in practice, so it was nice that if paid off. Taking a 2-0 lead was great. It really gave us a nice cushion to work with.”

La Salle (0-1) scored with less than 20 minutes left in the game.

La Salle out-shot Rider 15-9. Rider senior goalkeeper Dan Riverso (Williamstown) made three saves. “Dan played a great game for us,” said Fager.

Andrew Bernard made three saves for La Salle.

Rider travels to Monmouth for a 3:00 pm game Tuesday.  “The game was very physical, like most games are with the Philly colleges,” Fager said. “It was an exciting game, a good one to win.”
