LAWRENCEVILLE—Rider sophomore Anthony Gilbert (Jamison, PA/Central Bucks South) scored his first collegiate goal to tie the score at 1-1, as the Broncs tied Richmond in the season opener. “That was my first one at Rider, and it felt great,” said Gilbert.
Gilbert was known as a scorer at Central Bucks South High School and on his nationally ranked Delco Club team. “That’s a big monkey off the back,” Gilbert said. “Getting the first one is the hardest. Now I’m all set.”
The Spiders took a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute of the game on a goal by freshman Stephen Chareczko, just five minutes after Chareczko entered the game.
Richmond led 1-0 at the half, before Gilbert collected a loose ball and scored from 30 yards out 16 minutes into the second half. “Gilbert is a very gifted player,” said Fager. “He’s fast and very technical. He can play several positions, which you saw today. He’s a guy that makes us click right now. He has a great sense of the game.”
“That’s what I’m there for, sort of a utility player,” Gilbert said. “I don’t mind playing four or five different positions, as long as I’m playing. That’s my strength, being versatile.”
“I think we are vastly ahead of where we were at this stage last year,” said Rider head coach Russ Fager. “We have a better athlete pool on the field. This year our team is made up of much better athletes, and we’re doing a better job of playing together on the field.”
“There’s a much better attitude on the team this year,” said Gilbert. “Everyone is playing for everyone else. ‘Team First, Team Last’ has become our motto.”
Rider out-shot Richmond 16-11. “I thought (senior) Adam Bailey (Southampton, PA/Archbishop Wood) had an exceptional game,” Fager said, “as did (junior) Lee Tomasso (Westfield) and (junior) Mark Ockenhouse (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks East). They played well in the middle and I thought we controlled that part of the field very well.”
Rider senior goalkeeper Dan Riverso (Williamstown), a Preseason All-MAAC selection, made five saves. “Riverso had a good game back in the nets,” Fager said. Eric Sciocchetti made seven saves for Richmond.
Rider travels to La Salle for a 2:30pm game.
