Broncs in the Pros

LAWRENCEVILLE—After the successful debut of Rider University graduate Kevin Barry ’01 for the Atlanta Braves in the majors on Monday night, we are catching up with the other Rider Broncs who have moved on to the professional baseball ranks.

James Hoey (Baltimore Orioles) a 6’6” 200 pound right-handed pitcher was recently named to the 2006 South Atlantic League Northern Division all-star team.  The day following the game, Hoey was promoted to the Frederick Keys in Maryland (high single A-Carolina League) and is 0-0 with a 4.50 e.r.a. with one save in two appearances.

At Delmarva, Hoey was 2-1 with a 2.54 e.r.a. in 21 games.

Hoey (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) was drafted by Baltimore in 2003 after his junior season at Rider (13th round) and was the 374th player selected.
 
As a junior, Hoey finished 6-4 with a 2.24 earned run average.  Hoey compiled 63 strikeouts and 44 walks in 88 innings pitched, starting 11 games.  In his three seasons at Rider Hoey won 12 games and saved 10.

Carl Loadenthal ’03 (Southampton, Pa./William Tennent), a 5’11”, 185 pound outfielder, is at Myrtle Beach (Atlanta Braves-high single A-Carolina League) and could face Hoey this week.  Loadenthal is batting .329 with three homers, 18 RBIs and 12 stolen bases in 18 attempts.  Loadenthal batted .167 for Mississippi in double A earlier this season.

Loadenthal was named to the 2003 ABCA/Rawlings All-East Region second team, his senior season at Rider batting .337 with 59 hits in 48 games.  That season he stole 35 bases in 37 attempts and scored 51 runs, while hitting six home runs.

Loadenthal graduated from Rider with a degree in communication and as the career leader in runs scored (165) and stolen bases (80). 

A first-team All-New Jersey and second team All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference center fielder, Loadenthal finished fourth in the nation in stolen bases per game in 2003.  In his college career, Loadenthal compiled 194 hits, fifth highest ever at Rider, and 15 home runs, 14th highest at Rider.

Scott Knazek (Los Angeles Angels) a 6’1”, 215 pound catcher (Browns Mills/Pemberton) is currently in Utah, playing rookie ball with the Orem Owlz (Pioneer League).  In his first six games, Knazek is batting .348 with a double, triple, three RBIs and a stolen base with a slugging percentage of .478.

Knazek was a 15th round pick of the Angels in the 2006 draft, signing after his junior season at Rider.

Knazek, batted .275 with 55 hits in 54 games during the 2006 season.  Knazek was third on the team in slugging percentage (.395) and led the team with 47 runs scored.

As a catcher Knazek threw out 17 runners attempting to steal this past season. In 2005 as a sophomore Knazek earned second team All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference honors, batting .316.

In his Rider career, Knazek compiled 126 hits in 125 games, with 24 doubles, two triples and five home runs, while scoring 91 runs.
