FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Rider's Barry Makes Major League Debut at Yankee Stadium

LAWRENCEVILLE—Lou Gehrig, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Kevin Barry.  The first four are legends that played at Yankee Stadium.  And for Barry, perhaps a legend in the making.

Less than two days after being called up by the Atlanta Braves, Rider grad Kevin Barry (’01) made his major league debut in New York, against the Yankees in Yankee Stadium, pitching for the Atlanta Braves, in front of 54,226 fans.

Barry entered the game on Monday night with the Braves trailing 5-0 and recorded three shutout innings, including a strikeout of New York’s Jason Giambi.  Giambi had all five RBI’s for the Yankees in the game as New York posted a 5-2 win.  Barry was able to keep Atlanta in the game long enough to bring the tying run to the plate in the ninth inning.

Not a bad stage to enter the majors on after toiling in the minors for the Braves during the past six seasons.

Barry a 6’2”, 235 pound, 27-year-old right-handed pitcher from Princeton Junction, New Jersey (West Windsor-Plainsboro South H.S.) who graduated from Rider with a degree in Business Administration, was promoted to the Atlanta Braves major league roster on Saturday.

At Rider, Barry went 20-12, recording a Rider single-season record 91 strikeouts in 2001.  Barry graduated with a school record 262 K’s with the Braves making Barry a 14th round draft pick.

In 2000, Barry was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference South pitcher of the year for the second season in a row and was drafted in the 15th round by Oakland.  Barry became the first Bronc to return for his senior season after being drafted.

This season before the call up, Barry was 3-4 at triple A Richmond with a 3.26 ERA, striking out 63 while walking only 27 in 77 1/3 innings over 15 games.

In the home of legends, Barry now owns a major league e.r.a. of 0.00.

And maybe the start that legends are made of.
