The Rider University fall tennis season came to an abrupt end when the match at Drexel was rained out on Saturday.

It was worth the wait. The Broncs swept Wagner Thursday in a match that began on October 11 and was suspended due to rain. “In my 12 years here I don’t think we’ve ever continued a match like this,” said Rider head coach Ed Torres.

The Broncs lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match against Manhattan Tuesday.

The future is now for the men and almost now for the women. With five rookies in the men’s lineup and five prospective student-athletes looking on who could help with the women’s team in the fall of 2007, the Broncs faced Mount St. Mary’s on Sunday.

The women’s tennis Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match between Manhattan and Rider scheduled for today was postponed due to rain.

The Rider tennis teams split a non-conference match against Morgan State with the women winning and the men’s team losing on Sunday afternoon.

The Broncs lost at La Salle Saturday. “We played the best we could against a decent team in the windy conditions,” said head coach Ed Torres.

The tennis match between the Broncs and Seahawks was suspended due to rain on Wednesday. “We played the singles matches first and won all three that have been completed,” said Rider coach Ed Torres.

The Broncs swept Coppin State on Saturday. “Our first sweep of the season,” said Rider head coach Ed Torres. “That was good to get today.”

To some, challenges present problems.  To others, challenges present opportunities.  For Rider senior Caitlin Crawbuck, challenges are fun.

The Broncs defeated Monmouth Tuesday in a match originally scheduled for September 14. “It was pretty windy out there today, but the girls played nice and steady,” said Rider head coach Ed Torres.

All good things must come to an end.  The Broncs were swept by Siena in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match Saturday with senior Caitlin Crawbuck (Jacobstown/Northern Burlington) losing for the first time in 20 matches.

The streak continues. Although the Broncs were swept by FDU Wednesday, Rider senior Caitlin Crawbuck (Jacobstown/Northern Burlington) extended her winning streak to 20 singles matches with a pro set victory at second singles.  “Caitlin is the steadiest player I’ve ever had in my 12 years here,” said Rider head coach Ed Torres.

In the initial Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match of the season, the Broncs spilt with Saint Peter’s Sunday. “The players play hard every match, but I think the MAAC matches mean more to them,” said head coach Ed Torres. “We all know the MAAC matches are the most important.”

The Broncs began the 2006 fall tennis season at NJIT Saturday. “The women had a very close match,” said head coach Ed Torres. “We gave a good account for ourselves today, even though I’m disappointed that we lost,” said Torres.

One of the greatest tennis players to ever compete in a Rider uniform, Rider University tennis coach Ed Torres is still competing, and still winning. Torres recently won a gold medal in doubles and a silver medal in singles at the New Jersey Senior Olympic Games in the 70 to 74 age bracket, held in Atlantic City.  Torres has now qualified for the National Senior Olympic Games to be held next year in Louisville, Kentucky.
