The Rider University baseball team has signed six recruits for the 2008 season, Rider head baseball coach Barry Davis announced.  “This class gives us needed depth on the mound and two position players that can step in and play right away in the field,” said Davis, the 2006 MAAC Baseball Co-Coach of the Year. “They are all quality students and we are excited they chose Rider to further their education.”

Rider Athletics Helping Feed the Hungry During Thanksgiving

As part of the MAAC Gives Back and The Rider Athletics Partners in a Caring Community Program, Rider Athletics and eight of the varsity teams assisted the Rider University's Center for Multicultural Affairs and Community Service by donating food during the 2006 annual drive.

The Broncs lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader at regular season champion Le Moyne Friday, and Rider (25-29, 17-10 MAAC) finishes in third place in the conference. “Our goal was to get in, and we got in,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis, who guided Rider to the playoffs in just his second season. Rider last played in the MAAC tournament in 2002.

With two victories over Canisius, combined with Marist’s three losses to LeMoyne this weekend, the Rider University baseball team can finish no lower than fourth place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, the conference confirmed on Monday. “Relief,” stated Rider head coach Barry Davis, upon hearing the official word Monday after speculating Rider had clinched. “This is a goal we set early on, and now it is certainly nice to have achieved it.”

The second game of the series began on Saturday and was suspended in the fourth inning with the Broncs holding a 6-0 lead.  “We won two of three conference games on the road, and that’s good,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis.

The Broncs won the first game of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday, and are leading the second game 6-0 in the top of the fourth inning before rain suspended play. “This was a big win for us,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis.  “I’d like to keep this rolling.” Rider (24-25, 16-6 MAAC) has won 10 of its last 13 games.

The scar begins about two inches below the elbow and runs about the same above on Jim Hoey's right arm. Ligament replacement, or Tommy John surgery is almost common place in baseball these days, even for high school players, but it can be a tough road to recovery.  Hoey has successfully completed the recovery, with one setback, and he is now setting his sights on South Atlantic League batters as the Delmarva Shorebirds closer.

That is what happened to the Rider baseball team Wednesday, losing to Monmouth for the third time this season. “We play them one more time, so that gives us a goal to shoot for, beating Monmouth this year,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis.

Freshman Jamie Hayes (Sunrise, Fla./Piper) had three hits and scored three runs as the right fielder, and struck out three batters in the ninth inning as a pitcher, to lead Rider to a come-from-behind victory at La Salle Tuesday. “Hayes looked like a man today,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis. “He played well in all phases of the game.”

The Broncs lost to the host Bears of Mercer Tuesday night, despite two doubles and four RBI by freshman Maurice Williams (Tinton Falls, N.J./Monmouth Regional). “Williams is swinging a hot bat right now,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis.

The Broncs began a three-game series at UAB by collecting eight hits, but committed five errors in the first lop-sided loss of the season. “We’ve been competitive all season, but you’re going to have games like this,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis. “We had one bad inning where it just snowballed.’

Senior Bryan Wagner (Flemington, N.J./North Hunterdon) hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth inning to cut the lead to 6-5, but that was as close as the Broncs could get at Delaware Wednesday. “Again, we’re right there,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis.  “This was a good, competitive baseball game. We just got beat by a good team today.”

March 5, 2006 - Longwood 7 Rider 5

Despite out-hitting the host Lancers 14-12, the Rider Broncs lost at Longwood Sunday. “We hit the ball, we just had two bad innings,” said head coach Barry Davis.  “We couldn’t field the ball in the first inning, and we couldn’t pitch the ball in the eighth.”
