Rider’s Hayes MAAC Rookie of Week
LAWRENCEVILLE—Jamie Hayes, a freshman on the Rider University baseball team, was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week for all games played May 8-14.
Last week Hayes (Sunrise, Florida/Piper) batted .533 with eight hits and eight RBI, leading Rider to a 3-1 week. Hayes’ first of two doubles in the middle game of the three-game series at Canisius came in a three-run third inning that gave Rider a 6-0 lead in the conference win. That victory clinched a playoff spot and put Rider at .500 (temporarily) for the first time this year.
In the first game of the Canisius series, the Broncs built a 6-1 lead in the second inning on a two-run single by Hayes, who had four RBI in game one. Hayes batted .600 in the MAAC series with seven RBI.
Hayes was named the New Jersey College Baseball Association Rookie of the Week May 1-7 and April 3-9, and was previously the MAAC Rookie of the Week May 3-9.
Hayes currently leads Rider with a .370 average, compiling 64 hits in 48 games for the 25-26 Broncs. As a closer on the mound, Hayes owns a 3.29 earned run average, a 1-0 record and four saves.
Rider is in second place in the MAAC (17-7) and concludes the regular season with a three-game series at first place Le Moyne (18-5) Thursday and Friday.
The MAAC Championship tournament is May 25-27 in Fishkill, NY, hosted by Marist College.
