BUFFALO, NY—The Broncs won a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series two games to one at Canisius this weekend. The second game of the series began on Saturday and was suspended in the fourth inning with the Broncs holding a 6-0 lead.  “We won two of three conference games on the road, and that’s good,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis.

In that second game, Rider scored three runs in the second inning without a hit, receiving five walks and an error. “We forced them to throw strikes and they struggled,” said Davis. “We sort of took the bat out of our guys hands for a while, but it paid off.”

Rider built a 6-0 lead in the third inning on a two-run single by junior Jeff Reynolds (Denville/Parsippany Hills) and an RBI single by freshman Adam Tussey (Brooklawn/Gloucester). Freshman Jamie Hayes (Sunrise, FL/Piper) also doubled in that inning, one of two doubles for Hayes in the game, and scored three runs. “Hayes had a good weekend,” said Davis. “He hit the ball hard.”

Freshman Jimmer Kennedy (Levittown, PA/Holy Ghost Prep) started the game on Saturday, and junior Mike Dyszel (Bristol, PA) finished on Sunday for the win. “The key to the middle game victory was the pitching,” said Davis. “Kennedy did well on Saturday and Dyszel did great today. They both came right at them and did a good job.  Without the mid-week game for him to start, Dyszel is going to be a key reliever for us, and today was a good sign that he is ready to do well in that role. We’ll need him in that role next weekend (at LeMoyne), and hopefully the following weekend (MAAC tournament).”

In the third game of the series, Rider (25-26, 17-7 MAAC) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on another RBI single by Hayes.

Canisius (17-34, 8-16 MAAC) tied the score at 1-1 in the third inning and scored four runs in the fourth inning on four hits and a costly Rider error. “We had one inning when we just didn’t play well,” said Davis. “We made a ton of mistakes and they cost us.”

Rider cut the lead to 5-3 in the seventh inning when senior Tom Letizia (Fair Lawn) collected his second hit of the game and scored for the final score. Freshman Sean Olson (Vineland/St. Augustine Prep) doubled in the third game and senior Bryan Wagner (Flemington/Hunterdon Central) had two of Rider’s 11 hits.

Rider plays the final three-game series of the regular season at LeMoyne May 18-19.
