Rider’s Wynter Most Outstanding Female Track Performer
Fenlator / Men’s 4x400 set new meet records
LAWRENCEVILLE—Both the women’s and men’s outdoor track and field teams placed second to Manhattan in the 2006 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships hosted by Rider this weekend. “I’m not disappointed in our performance at all,” said head coach Rob Pasquariello. “But, I am disappointed that we finished second again. For the men’s team, this is as close (11 points) as we have ever been.”
For the women’s team, senior Carla Wynter (Roselle, N.J./Abraham Clarke) was named the Most Outstanding Performer for the second consecutive year, winning both the 200m (25.87) and the 400m (57.96) for the second straight spring.
“Carla had a great day winning two events and helping the relays both place second," said Pasquariello who is finishing his first season at the helm of the track program, stepping in for Bill Hodge who is on medical leave. "She definitely deserved it and it is a great way for her to finish her MAAC career. We are looking for her to have a strong effort next week in the ECAC Championships.”
“I felt hungry and ready to finally do something,” said Wynter. “This year I was in a bit of a slump, and I wanted to show the coaches that I wasn’t slacking off. I wanted to show people I could still run.”
Wynter won the 200 at the MAAC indoor championships this winter, but did not run up to her own high expectations this spring. Until today. “I was excited today,” said Wynter. “Being a senior I really wanted to do well today.”
Wynter began her track career as a distance runner in high school. “I was thrown into the 400 and really liked it,” said Wynter. “It was the shortest race I had ever run. That’s probably why I prefer it to the 200. It is a challenge, and it isn’t easy. I like challenges.”
Junior Jazmine Fenlator (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) won the shot put with a meet record throw of 14.11m and also won the discus (46.66m).
For the men’s team, sophomore Randy Nixon (Manorville, N.Y./West Hampton) won the 110m hurdles (14.86), was fourth in the 100m (11.04) and sixth in the 200m (22.15). “Manhattan is a tremendous team and we made a really good run,” Pasquariello added. “We are always right there but we can’t get over the hump. We need to find a way to do it.”

“I think on the men’s side it is more an issue of depth, but it is right there for us on both sides, it’s an event here and an event there. It’s a matter of stepping up at the right time. Manhattan is not going to lose, you have to go out and beat them and we are still learning how to do that,” Pasquariello said.
The men’s 4x400 relay of Parillo, Morris, Lado and Owodunni set a new MAAC championship meet record, winning with a time of 3:17.04. The men’s 4x100 of Nixon, Payne, Hill, and Harris also won with a time of 41.66.

“Overall this season, we are really pleased. It was a tough transition with coach Hodge being out and the kids made it easy for me to step in and do the coaching job. We ran a lot of personal bests and scored more points in the conference meets than we ever had. We had a great group of kids on both sides,” said Pasquariello. “The seniors did a great job today and the underclassmen also did well and those underclassmen are the foundation for our future and we have high expectations for them.”
“I hope this experience will make both the men’s and women’s team hungrier,” Pasquariello added. I know I’m tired placing second and we tell them all the time that there isn’t much of a difference between the two teams [Manhattan and Rider]. It comes down to believing you can do it when the conference meet is contested.”
Rider competes at the IC4A/ECAC Championships, hosted by Princeton May 12-14.
