TOWSON, MD—The Broncs lost a non-conference doubleheader at Towson Wednesday.  “With all of the pressure of the conference run, you could almost see a game like the first game coming,” said head coach Tricia Carroll.

Towson (31-27) put up eight runs in the second inning of the opener and never looked back, winning 10-1.

“We were missing some players due to finals and being on the road for the second day in a row caught up with us,” Carroll added.

Down 1-0 in the fifth inning of the nightcap, Rider (23-24) tied the game on an RBI single by sophomore Tiffany Day-Neutill (Agoura Hills, Calif./Oaks Christian).  Day-Neutill had two hits on the day.

The Broncs took a 2-1 lead in the seventh inning when freshman Clarissa Ortiz (Vineland, N.J./Sacred Heart) scored on a Towson error.  Ortiz had two hits and scored twice in the doubleheader.

Towson won the game 3-2, on an RBI single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

“I was happy with the way we battled in the second game,” Carroll said.  “With some players out of position, we were still able to make some good plays and we battled right into the last inning, almost winning the game.  We just couldn’t get the third out in the seventh.”

The Broncs complete the regular season on Saturday, May 6 with the seniors being honored prior to the Princeton doubleheader at 1:00pm.

“We were a little tired, and a little off our mental edge having put so much into the last eight league games,” Carroll said.  Sophomore “Jess [Holland] (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) pitched well in the second game and we almost got out of the day with a split.  Towson’s a good team and they took advantage of every chance they got with runners on base.”

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament runs from Friday, May 12 through Sunday, May 14 at DeLuca Field in Stratford, Connecticut.  This is the third time in the last four seasons that Rider has qualified for the MAAC playoffs.
