ORLANDO, FLORDIA—The Rider University golf team shot a 317 Friday in the first round of the three-day Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Golf Championships, held at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex. “There’s a lot more golf to be played,” said Rider head coach Chet Dalgewicz, “and we WILL play better tomorrow.”

For the Broncs, sophomore Tyler Brewington (Orangeville, Pa./Benton) shot a 76 on the par 72 Magnolia Golf Course, fourth best overall among the 45 golfers, and senior Jonathan Kent (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West) shot a 77 to finish the first day in seventh place overall. “There were not a lot of scores in the seventies, so you have to be reasonably pleased with the way Tyler and Jonathan hung in there and posted decent numbers,” said Dalgewicz.

Sophomore Josh Krumholz (Reading, PA/Gov. Mifflin) shot an 81, the 23rd best round of the day and right in the middle of the pack.

Sophomore Dylan Maxey (Montrose, PA/Montrose Area) had an 83 (29th) and senior Brad Domenico (Colts Neck, N.J./Colts Neck) shot an 84 (34th).

“The course played very tough today and our guys did not have a good day,” said Dalgewicz.

Last year Rider placed a best-ever third in the MAAC Championships, and looked to improve on that finish this year. Earlier this season defeated the defending MAAC champion Loyola at the Navy Invitational.

“We dug ourselves a hole but this is nothing we can’t overcome,” said Dalgewicz. “Tomorrow I’m expecting a much better performance, and then there is another round after that. We’re not out of the hunt by any means.”

Also for Rider, senior Jeff Palmer (Bensalem, PA) and sophomore Robert Gomez (Succasunna) were named to the MAAC All-Academic golf team.  Palmer is a Business Administration major with a 3.31 grade point average, and Gomez is an Accounting major with a 3.63 g.p.a.

Team Scores: Siena 306, Iona 310, Loyola 311, Canisius 316, Rider 317, Fairfield 319, Niagara 325, Manhattan 330, Saint Peter’s 341

Play continues Saturday and Sunday.
