Rider Sixth Seed at MAAC Championships
FLUSHING MEADOWS, NY—The Rider University tennis teams are both seeded sixth in the eight-team Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships this weekend, held at the United States Tennis Association Center in New York. “It was important to stay away from the top two teams in the first round,” said Rider head coach Ed Torres. “Once you get away from the top two, anything can happen.”
The Rider women (11-7, 2-4 MAAC) take on the third seed, Niagara, at 3:30 pm Friday. The women are led by juniors Devin and Caitlin Crawbuck (Jacobstown/Northern Burlington Regional). Caitlin is 17-1 this season, 16-1 at third singles. “She is very steady, returns everything,” said Torres.
Caitlin Crawbuck enters the tournament having won her last 16 matches, dating back to the fall season. “That is an amazing accomplishment, with the competition she has faced,” said Torres, who won his first 31 matches at Rider before suffering his only collegiate loss as a junior.
Devin Crawbuck is 11-6 at second singles, and the twin sisters are 11-6 at first doubles. “The twins wear down their opponents,” said Torres. “Their opponents get frustrated, having to hit the ball 20 times before getting a point, so they go for winners too soon and lose the point.”
The Rider men (10-11, 1-5 MAAC) face Fairfield, the third seed, at 11:00 am Friday. The Broncs are led by freshman Casey Jedlinski (Manalapan), who is 9-3 at third singles, 10-4 overall. “Casey has been very steady for us,” said Torres, “and he can really crack it. He hits the ball hard, and to the corners.”
Junior Ragdee Saberon (Berlin, NJ/Overbrook) has won his last three matches at first singles and ended the regular season as the MAAC Player of the Week. Senior Chris Stanco (Downingtown, PA) has nine wins at second singles, and was the MAAC Player of the Week the first week of April. Senior Mike Greenberg (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock) is 6-4 at fourth singles.
Play continues with consolation and championship rounds on Saturday. The Championship match, as well as the matches for third, fifth and seventh place, take place on Sunday.
