PHILADELPHIA, PA—Senior Gene Crimoli (Shrewsbury/CBA) hit a two-run home run with two outs in the eighth inning to lead Rider to a come-from-behind win at Penn Tuesday. “We’ve won seven of our last nine road games, so that’s a good sign,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis.
Rider (14-21) trailed 8-7 before Crimoli’s team-high fifth home run of the season. “Gene’s home run was huge,” said Davis. Crimoli knocked in senior Mike Poalise (Hammonton) with the home run. “Poalise beat out an infield hit to set up the game-winning home run,” Davis said. “That was nice hustle on his part.”
The Broncs added an insurance run in the ninth inning.
Trailing 3-1, Rider scored four runs in the fourth inning on four hits, including a two-run double by junior Brad States (Paoli, Pa./Conestoga ) and an RBI double by senior Bryan Wagner (Flemington, N.J./North Hunterdon). “States got a chance to play today and made the most of it,” said Davis. “He knocked in three runs and all three were big runs.”
Junior Erik Holck (Readington, N.J./Hunterdon Central ) pitched two innings of shutout relief for the victory. “Holck came in and did a good job,” said Davis. “Penn had the tying run on third in the eighth inning and Erik got a big strikeout for us.”
Freshman Jamie Hayes (Sunrise, Fla./Piper) had two of Rider’s 10 hits and pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for the save, his third. “Hayes hit the ball hard early in the game and he threw the ball hard late in the game today,” said Davis. “It was good to get him back on the mound. He hadn’t pitched in a while.”
Senior Tom Letizia (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn) tripled for Rider, as nine different Broncs collected a hit. “Everyone contributed today,’ said Davis. “It was a nice win.”
