PHILADELPHIA, Pa.—The Broncs lost a non-conference doubleheader at La Salle on Tuesday.

“We’re not competing very well right now,” said head coach Tricia Carroll.  “We are wasting great pitching efforts by not making routine plays and the mental mistakes are giving games away.”

In the first game, Rider (14-20) jumped out to a 3-0 lead on an RBI single from junior Nichole Mears (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal) and a two-run single by senior Jill Carrabus (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport).

Down 4-3, Rider tied the game in the fifth inning on a home run by senior Jen Cullen (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Immaculata), her first of the season.  The Explorers won the game in the 10th inning on a walk, two sacrifices and an RBI single.

Freshman Laci Landrum (Grand Praire, Texas/So. Grand Praire) pitched nine and two-thirds, allowing only two earned runs.

In game two, Rider again jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, keyed by a two-run single from junior Ashley Boulden (Brooklawn, N.J./Gloucester).

Cullen and Boulden each had four hits in the doubleheader with Carrabus and Mears each adding three hits.

Down 3-2, La Salle won the second game in the seventh inning on two singles and two Rider errors.

Freshman Lauren Brunner (Chino, Calif./Chino) went the distance in the second game, allowing two earned runs in six plus innings pitched.

“I’m encouraged by the pitching efforts as the season has gone along,” Carroll added.  “The pitching has gotten better.  We just need to find a way, any way to make the plays behind them.  I’m not talking about amazing plays.  Just routine good solid defense.  We also need to capitalize on opportunities and play full games, not just one or two good innings.  We let teams hang around and the mental breakdowns are magnified in one-run games.”

Rider left 22 on base in the doubleheader, including 13 in the second game and are now 7-6 in one-run games this season.

“No one has quit on the season,” Carroll said.  “We just have to continue to play every inning and keep working hard.”

Rider hosts Lehigh in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday.
