Rider Wins Quad Meet
LAWRENCEVILLE—On a sun drenched afternoon, both the Rider University men’s and women’s track & field teams placed first against Sacred Heart University, the University of Delaware and Saint Peter’s College Saturday in the Rider Quad Meet. “We knew coming in today it was going to be nice weather, so we wanted to take advantage of that, and I’m proud of the way we did that,” said Rider coach Rob Pasquariello. “I’m happy with the way we competed. This was a fantastic win for our women’s team, beating solid programs like Sacred Heart and Delaware. This was a great day all around.”
For the Rider men, freshman Desmond Hamilton (Pennsauken, N.J./Pennsauken) won the long jump (7.04m) and the triple jump (13.64m), and ran on the winning 4 x 100 and the 4 x 400 relays. “Desmond has unlimited potential, on the track and in the jumps,” said Pasquariello. “As a freshman he came in very confident, all the schools wanted him, and he has done everything we have asked of him. With his attitude and talent he is going to be something special.”
For the Rider women, junior Jazmine Fenlator (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) broke her own Rider record in the hammer with a first place toss of 49.34m, and threw the discus an NCAA Regional qualifying distance of 48.02 to win that event. Fenlator also won the shot put with an ECAC qualifying toss of 14.29m. “All three of her throws were ECAC qualifiers today,” said Pasquariello. “Jaz has really matured over her three years at Rider. She doesn’t have the peaks and valleys anymore. She is still very demanding of herself, but she has learned to channel her energies and is very consistent.”
“We had great weather today, and that makes for a good meet,” said Fenlator, who holds the Rider records in the hammer, discus and the shot put. “We’re starting to get focused this time of year. We had great competition today, which brought out the best in our entire team, not just me. Our entire team did well today, in front of the home crowd, on our own turf. This was great for getting us ready for the MAAC Championships. And after MAACs my goal is to do well at the Regional and qualify for Sacramento (NCAAs in Sacramento, California).”
Fenlator qualified for the NCAA Regionals last season but was bothered by a shoulder injury and did not compete up to her potential. “My ‘PR’ last year would have placed sixth at Regionals, and the top five go to Nationals,” Fenlator remembered. “so I’m not that far off.”
Also for the Rider men, junior Doug Beck (Branchburg/Somerville) threw the discus an NCAA Regional qualifying distance of 51.97m to win the event.
Freshman Tim Cook (Glassboro) won the high jump (1.93m), junior Danny Enck (Lititz, Pa./Warwick ) won the hammer (50.12m), sophomore Randy Nixon (Manorville, NY/West Hampton) won the 110m hurdles (14.75), sophomore John Smith (Cliffwood Beach, N.J./Matawan) won the 1500m (4:00.91), senior Adam Kucinski (Erial, N.J./Highland Regional) won the pole vault (14’6.0”), senior Jamaal Harris (Beverly, N.J./Palmyra) won the 100m (10.68) and sophomore Paul Matuszak (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) won the 5000m (15:46.85).
For the Rider women, freshman Kelly Kajunski (Glenmore, Pa./Downington East) won the high jump (1.65m), senior Carla Wynter (Roselle, N.J./Abraham Clarke) won the 400m (59.52), junior Danielle Holmes (Hackensack, N.J./Holy Angels) won the triple jump (11.04m) and sophomore Rebecca Clatch (Drums, Pa./Hazelton Area) won the javelin (40.22).
