Rutgers University 2, Rider University 1 (10 innings)
PISCATAWAY— The Broncs lost in the 10th inning on an unearned run at Rutgers Thursday. The winning run was scored on two hits, a sacrifice bunt and a Rider error. The second game was called due to rain. “It was a great game,” said Rider head coach Tricia Carroll. “It was just one of those games where you are unfortunate to be on the losing end of it.”
Senior Heather Beintema (La Mesa, CA/Grossmont) pitched nine and one-third innings, striking out 10 while walking just two. “Heather was awesome,” said Carroll. “We played good defense for most of the game behind her as well. She was tough today.”
Rider (14-18) took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning when sophomore Aimee Schiller (Moreno Valley, CA) singled and scored on a single by senior Jen Cullen (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Immaculata). “We had some very good at bats,” Carroll said.
Cullen and junior Ashley Boulden (Brooklawn/Gloucester) each had two of Rider’s seven hits. “We hit the ball well today, but couldn’t get anything to drop,” said Carroll. “We hit a lot of balls hard at people.”
Rutgers (9-28) also had seven hits. The Scarlet Knights tied the score at 1-1 in the sixth inning on a leadoff home run by Kaitlyn Valiante. “The home run was a wind blown pop up,” said Carroll.
Rider plays at La Salle April 18.
