Monmouth University 4, Rider University 3 (11 innings)
WEST LONG BRANCH—Rider’s five game winning streak came to an end with an extra-inning loss at Monmouth Tuesday. “This was a well played college baseball game today,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis.
The last time Rider played Monmouth (13-11) the Hawks won 15-1, and Monmouth went on to defeat Temple 35-1 in the middle of a 10-game winning streak. “This was absolutely much better than the last time we played them,” Davis said.
Freshman Rick Neiderhaus hit a two-out, solo home run, his first of the year, in the bottom of the 11th inning. Neiderhaus had three of Monmouth’s nine hits. Monmouth has won 11 of its last 12 games.
Rider junior pitcher Mike Dyszel (Bristol, PA) struck out eight in six and two-thirds innings, allowing two earned runs without allowing a walk, and left the game with the score tied at 3-3. “Mike threw great, deserved to win,” said Davis.
Rider (11-20) took a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning on an RBI single by senior Mike Poalise (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton), his second RBI of the game. “Mike hit the ball hard today,” said Davis.
Rider took a 3-1 lead in the top of the seventh inning when freshman Jamie Hayes (Sunrise, Fla./Piper) singled and scored on a sacrifice fly. Hayes, the MAAC and the New Jersey Division I Rookie of the Week the first week of April, had two of Rider’s nine hits. “Hayes had a nice play in the out field as well as hitting the ball,” said Davis. “We played some defense today.”
Rider took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when senior Bryan Wagner (Flemington, N.J./North Hunterdon) struck out but reached first on a passed ball, stole second, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on a ground ball out.
Freshman Maurice Williams (Tinton Falls, N.J./Monmouth Regional) doubled and junior Scott Knazek (Browns Mills, N.J./Pemberton) had two hits.
Rider plays a three-game MAAC series at Iona Friday and Saturday. The Broncs are currently in third place in the MAAC (6-3), while Iona (2-7) is ninth. Last year Rider took two of three from Iona at Rider. “We’ll tee it up again Friday and hopefully we’ll continue to play good baseball,” Davis said.
