Scott Knazek - 100th career hit
FAIRFIELD, CT—The Broncs defeated Fairfield Monday to sweep the three-game Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference series. “We played good defense and we pitched well all weekend,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis. “We’re trying to win every series, and this catches us up.”
With two outs, Rider (11-19, 6-3 MAAC) scored three runs in the fifth inning on three hits, the biggest hit a two run double by freshman Jamie Hayes (Sunrise, Fla./Piper). Earlier in the day Hayes was named the MAAC Rookie of the Week for the first week of April. “After striking out his first two times up he really bounced back with a big hit,” said Davis.
Junior Justin Roszkowski (Clark/Arthur Johnson) started and pitched seven innings, striking out eight while allowing just four hits and one run. “Once he settled down he pitched well,” said Davis. “He threw a good fastball today and mixed in his change up.”
Senior Bryan Wagner (Flemington, N.J./North Hunterdon) and junior Scott Knazek (Browns Mills, N.J./Pemberton) each had two hits with Knazek becoming the third Bronc this season and 63rd Bronc overall to reach 100 career hits.
Rider scored three more runs in the sixth inning, keyed by an RBI single by senior Mike Poalise (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton). Poalise had four hits in the game, including a double. “Mike had a big two-out double that sparked us,” said Davis.
Freshman Maurice Williams (Tinton Falls, N.J./Monmouth Regional) hit a home run to lead off the second inning, giving Rider a 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Jeff Reynolds (Denville/Parsippany Hills) had three hits for the Broncs. “Jeff hit the ball hard all day, and turned the line up over three times out of the eight-hole,” said Davis.
Senior Tom Letizia (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn) doubled.
Rider plays at Monmouth Tuesday. That game was originally scheduled for Wednesday.
