PHILADELPHIA, PA— Freshman Jamie Hayes (Sunrise, Fla./Piper) had three hits and scored three runs as the right fielder, and struck out three batters in the ninth inning as a pitcher, to lead Rider to a come-from-behind victory at La Salle Tuesday. “Hayes looked like a man today,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis. “He played well in all phases of the game.”
Hayes hit a two-run single, stole second and third base, and scored to key a five-run fifth inning, as the Broncs took a 7-3 lead. “He hit, he ran, he knocked in runs, he had a nice catch in the outfield, and he pitched lights out,” said Davis. “He’s a good player.”
Junior Justin Roszkowski (Clark/Arthur L. Johnson) pitched eight innings, striking out seven, for the victory. “Justin did a great job giving us eight innings,” said Davis. “He hung tough. They threatened in the sixth inning but he battled out of it and pitched well. That’s the second straight game he’s pitched well.”
Trailing 3-0, Rider scored two runs in the fifth inning on three hits. “It wasn’t looking too good for a while,” said Davis.
Senior Gene Crimoli (Shrewsbury/Christian Brothers Academy) led off the ninth inning with a home run, his third of the season. Crimoli and senior Bryan Wagner (Flemington, N.J./North Hunterdon) each had two hits. “Gene and Wags both had big hits for us,” said Davis. “We were leading 7-3 when Gene hit his home run. Wags gave us the 5-3 lead with one of his hits.”
Rider hosts Seton Hall Wednesday.
