LAWRENCEVILLE—The Broncs committed eight errors in a loss to LIU Wednesday, despite out-hitting the Blackbirds. “You can’t expect to win if you commit errors like that,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis.
LIU (4-12) scored two runs in the ninth inning on two hits, a sacrifice bunt, an error and a sacrifice fly to break a 5-5 tie.
Rider (5-17) took a 5-3 lead in the fifth inning on a walk, two LIU errors and a single by senior Tom Letizia (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn), who had two of Rider’s eight hits. “Tommy hit the ball hard today,” said Davis. “Even his outs were hit hard.”
Junior pitcher Mike Dyszel (Bristol, PA) started and allowed no earned runs and just two hits, striking out four in five innings of work, and left the game with a 5-3 lead. “Mike deserved better,” Davis said. “He pitched well enough to win.”
Freshman Maurice Williams (Tinton Falls, N.J./Monmouth Regional) hit a two-run double in the third inning to give Rider a 3-2 lead. “Mo has had a hot bat the last two weeks,” Davis said. “He had a big hit again today.”
Junior Scott Knazek (Browns Mills, N.J./Pemberton) also had two hits for Rider.
Rider hosts Siena in a three-game MAAC series this weekend, beginning with a 12 noon doubleheader Saturday. “We have to do a better job in the field this weekend,” Davis said.
