PHILADLEPHIA, PA—Rider retuned from Spring Break to defeat St. Joe’s Tuesday, as every Bronc who batted got a hit. “We’ve been swinging the bats well al year, and today was no different,” said Rider head coach Barry Davis.
Rider (3-12) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning. “We had bases loaded and we only scored one in the first,” said Davis. “It was good to get more than one run with bases loaded in the fifth.
Rider broke open a 1-0 game with four runs in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly, a St. Joe balk, and four hits, the biggest hit a two-run double by junior Scott Knazek (Browns Mills, N.J./Pemberton). Knazek had two hits in the game. “Knazek had a big hit for us,” said Davis. “He’s our three hole hitter for a reason. That’s what we want him to do.”
Freshman pitcher Jim Kennedy (Levittown, PA/Holy Ghost Prep) pitched eight and one-third innings for the win, allowing one run while striking out four. “We got a lead early and Jim was able to go right at them with fastballs,” said Davis. “He had good velocity and he was steady all game. We also turned a couple of double lays today.”
Senior Bryan Wagner (Flemington, N.J./North Hunterdon) hit an RBI single in the fifth inning, his second hit of the game, to give Rider a 6-0 lead. Senior Tom Letizia (Fair Lawn, N.J./Fair Lawn) also had two of Rider’s 12 hits, and freshman Adam Tussey (Brooklawn, N.J./Gloucester) doubled.
Rider plays the home opener Wednesday at 3:00pm against Monmouth.
