ORLANDO, FLORIDA—The Broncs split a pair of games at the Spring Rebel Games Wednesday. “I had a little chat with our pitchers and we had two good games today,” said head coach Tricia Carroll.
In the first game against Colgate (5-5), senior Heather Beintema (La Mesa, Calif./Grossmont) pitched a two-hitter, striking out nine. “Heather is back on track,” said Carroll. “She pitched very well today.”
The Broncs scored the only run they needed when freshman Katy Mills (Seattle, Wash./Mount Rainier) doubled in the second inning and scored on a single by sophomore Mandi Sekly (Canyon County, CA/Canyon). Sekly had two of Rider’s nine hits. “The bottom of the order is starting to come around, keeping innings alive for us,” said Carroll.
Rider added two more runs in the third inning when sophomore Tiffany Day Neutill (Agoura Hills, Calif./Oaks Christian) singled and scored on a double by senior Jamie Farley (Clifton), and Farley scored on a single by junior Nichole Mears (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal).
Against Dayton (5-7), the Broncs gave up an unearned run in the sixth inning for the only score of the contest, throwing away the cut off after a double.
Rider (4-7) senior Jen Cullen (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Immaculata) had four hits in the two games, and Day Neutill had three. “Jen and Tiff continue to perform well at the plate for us,” said Carroll. “In the first inning against Dayton Tiffany flew out to the wall, just missing a home run.”
Freshman Lauren Brunner (Chino, Calif./Chino) started and pitched four innings of shutout ball, allowing four hits, and had a hit at the plate. “Lauren threw well in the four innings she was in there,” said Carroll.
Rider plays Butler and Binghamton on Friday before returning north.
