BOSTON, MA—The Rider University indoor track & field teams competed at the Eastern Championships this weekend, with the men at the ICAAAA Championships at Boston University, and the women at the ECAC Championships, held at the Reggie Lewis Track. “This was a good weekend for us,” said coach Rob Pasquariello.

For the Rider women, junior Jazmine Fenlator (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Valley) placed seventh in the weight throw with a Rider record distance of 57’5.5” to earn All-East honors. On Saturday Fenlator placed ninth in the shot put (45’11”). “I had a pretty good day today,” said Fenlator, who two weeks ago won the shot put and placed second in the wt. throw at the MAAC Indoor Championships. “The ECAC, for us, is pretty much an individual’s day, trying to get ‘PRs,’ (personal records),” said Fenlator. “The talent level is so great at this event, especially this year, when distances that have won in the recent past didn’t even qualify this year. The caliber has improved so much, and it is good to compete against this level. It’s good to push yourself, to get pushed.  It shows it you are able to step up to the competition, or if you need more work.”

For the Rider men, junior David Payne (Neptune) placed seventh in the 200m (21.40) to earn All-East honors and finished ninth in the 55m dash (6.45) on Sunday. On Saturday Payne broke the Rider record in the 200 meters (21.35) in the preliminaries and Payne’s time of 6.40 in the preliminaries of the 55m dash was the third fastest. “David has improved in the 200 by over three-tenths of a second, which is phenomenal,” said Pasquariello.  “He is really just learning how to run this race, just starting to realize how good he can be.”

“It was a good feeling today,” said Payne, who won both the 200m and the 55m dash at the MAAC Championships February 24.  “I just wanted to ‘PR’ and I was able to do that this weekend in both events. This is what it is all about for me. Competing against this level of competition. To run against the best.”

“The MAAC championships are more about team work, everyone pulling for each other,” said Fenlator. “Everyone doing what is best for the team. I prefer the MAACs because of the team concept, but the ECAC’s are good too.”

“The MAACs are more important to me, for the team,” said Payne. “The IC4A is an individual’s event.”

Junior Doug Beck (Branchburg/Somerville) threw the shot put 51’1” Sunday for a personal record, placing 15th.
