Canisius College 84, Rider University 65

BUFFALO, NY—Despite out-scoring the defending MAAC Champions in the second half, the Broncs lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at Canisius Sunday afternoon. “We tried to bring it up a notch in the second half,” said Rider head coach Tori Harrison, “and I felt we did that.”

The Broncs out-scored Canisius 41-37 in the second half.

For Rider (3-22, 2-14 MAAC), freshman Danielle Costantino (Norristown, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) tied her career-high with 18 points, making all five of her foul shots and three three-point field goals.

Rider junior Theia Preston (West Blocton, Ala./Wallace CC) scored a career-high 13 points and grabbed a career-high eight rebounds, making five of nine field goal attempts. “Theia really played well away from the basket,” Harrison said.

Canisius (15-10, 12-4 MAAC) took a 27-10 lead mid-way through the first half, and led 47-24 at half time. Canisius senior Jessica Steeves compiled 17 points in her home court finale.

Senior Christine Catalanotto (Flushing, NY/Christ the King) and sophomore Janele Henderson (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Loughlin) each added 10 points for Rider, with Catalanotto adding five assists.

Rider hosts Iona Thursday and Marist Sunday in the final two games of the regular season. “We want to play well in these last two home games,” Harrison said, “and build some momentum for the tournament.”

The MAAC Tournament is March 2-5 in Albany’s Pepsi Arena.
