SANTA BARBARA, CA— The Broncs lost to the host Gauchos in the second round of the rain-shortened Softball By The Beach Tournament, hosted by UCSB. “We gave a much better effort today,” said Rider head coach Tricia Carroll. “I’m happy with the effort. We had our chances, and the game could have gone either way.”

After losing by 18 runs to San Diego State on Friday, Rider faced a team that defeated San Diego State. “Santa Barbara is a very good team, so overall, I’m pleased,” said Carroll.

Rider senior pitcher Heather Beintema (La Mesa, Calif./Grossmont) held UCSB (5-2) to just three hits, including an RBI single in the first inning and a solo home run in the fifth, and struck out six. “Heather threw real well,” said Carroll. “She looked good. She just made one bad pitch.”

Rider (0-2) managed four hits, two by sophomore Tiffany Day Neutill (Agoura Hills, Calif./Oaks Christian). “Tiffany had a nice bunt hit,” Carroll said.

Senior Jill Carrabus (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport) and junior Nichole Mears (Simi Valley, Calif./Royal) also singled for Rider. “Jill had a nice hit,” Carroll said. “She has worked hard, is in great shape, and from behind the plate she works well with Heather. Nichole is solid, both at the plate and in the field.”

Rider plays Cal State Northridge Sunday at UCSB. “We’re a veteran team and we played like that today, we played with composure,” Carroll said.
