FAIRFIELD, CT—The Broncs improved to 7-0-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association with a CAA victory at Sacred Heart Saturday, winning eight of 10 bouts. “We picked up right where we left off last night and we wrestled pretty good,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor.
Sophomore Zack Cunliffe (Farmingdale/Howell), the second ranked 133 in the CAA, defeated the third ranked 133 in the CAA, 2-0. “Zach beat the kid who was runner-up in the CAA last year, so that was a nice win for him,” said Taylor.
Sophomore Ryan Smith (Olmstead Falls, OH/Olmstead Falls), sophomore Doug Umbehauer (Shamong/Lenape), sophomore TJ Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff), junior Ryan Cunningham (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) and junior Joe Maroney (Bensalem, PA) all won by a major decisions.
The Broncs (12-6-1) are 9-2-1 in the last 12 dual meets and have a February 20 showdown with 20th ranked Hofstra, the four-time defending CAA Champion, in Rider’s Alumni Gym Presidents Day and Senior Night Monday. “Hofstra is a very tough opponent,” Taylor said. “That is going to be a tall order.”
