Rider Picked 6th in MAAC
Cullen Pre-Season All-MAAC
LAWRENCEVILLE—The 2006 Rider University softball team has been picked to finish sixth in the nine-team Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in the league’s preseason poll, voted on by the league’s head coaches.
Fairfield University was picked to win the MAAC, followed by two-time defending championship Canisius. Iona, Manhattan and Marist round out the top five in the poll.
Rider outfielder Jen Cullen (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Immaculata) was selected to the Preseason All-MAAC team. Cullen, a senior marketing major was a 2nd team All-MAAC selection in 2005, batting .400 (52/130) and led the Broncs in batting average, home runs (4) and stolen bases (11). Cullen enters the 2006 campaign 32nd on the all-time Bronc career hit list with 103.
“The All-MAAC selection for Jen is very deserving,” said Rider head coach Tricia Carroll, who is entering her 12th season. “Jen came on strong at the end of last year and looked good in the fall. We are expecting her to take the lead in the outfield and from the number one spot in the lineup, create the offense.”
The Broncs open the 2006 season in California this weekend at the ‘Softball by the Beach Invitational’ facing San Diego State, Cal-State Northridge, Long Beach State, University of Tulsa and host University of California Santa Barbara.
Rider advanced to the MAAC Championship Game in two of the last three seasons, winning the title in 2003 and finishing runner-up in 2004.
