LAWRENCEVILLE—Despite 17 points by sophomore Janele Henderson (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Loughlin), and 16 points by junior Kara Borel (East Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg), the Broncs lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game to Saint Peter’s Sunday afternoon on Madison Square Garden television. “Kara and Janel both played well,” said Rider head coach Tori Harrison. “They shot the ball better today.”
Henderson and Borel combined for 10 of 17 shooting from the field, and 10 of 13 shooting from the foul line.
Rider (2-21, 1-13 MAAC) trailed 67-49 before going on a 9-0 run, four points by Henderson, to cut the lead to 67-55 with 7:00 left to play, but that was as close as the Broncs could get. “The kids refused to give up, and that is an encouraging sign,” said Harrison. “That is something to build on going into the tournament. There were a lot of positives today.”
“The second half we began to play our style of game,” said Borel.
Holding a 46-37 lead, Saint Peter’s (10-13, 6-8 MAAC) went on a 9-0 run, four points by Khalisha Lewis, to take a 55-37 lead with 13:47 left to play. Lewis finished with a game-high 25 points, making 11 foul shots, and grabbed a game-high seven rebounds. “They had scoring spurts, and we couldn’t put the ball in the basket in key moments,” said Borel.
The score was tied at 11-11 before Saint Peter’s out-scored Rider 10-0, four by Lewis, to take a 21-11 lead, and the Peahens led 40-27 at half time.
Senior Christine Catalanotto (Flushing, NY/Christ the King) added nine points and five rebounds, and freshman Shaunice Parker (Waldorf, MD/West Lake) added nine points. “We were two points shy of having four players in double figures,” said Harrison.
Rider travels to Western New York this weekend to take on Niagara Friday and Canisius Sunday. “I’m hoping we’ll play well in Buffalo, our last road trip before the tournament,” Harrison said.
“We have nothing to lose,” said Borel. “Win or lose, we’re just trying to go out there and play well, and get ready for MAACs.”
