Brandon Modrov, a junior from Smithtown, NY, and Jazmine Fenlator, a junior from Wayne, NJ, have been named the Rider University Athletes of the Year for the 2005-2006 academic year.

Sometimes, the opponent is that good.  Set seven conference records, swim beyond even the lofty expectations of an award-winning coaching staff and yet, still finish second.  A little disappointment for the swimmers but not a bit of disappointment in the effort from anyone.

The Rider University men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are competing at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championships, hosted by Loyola College this weekend.  After the second day, the Rider women’s team is in first place out of ten teams and the men’s team is in second place out of eight teams.

Like the pool you are swimming in, depth is very important.  The deeper you are, the better your chances of success as a team.  For both the women’s and men’s swim teams, the 2006 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championships will be decided by depth and after the first day of competition on Thursday, that subject was on the mind of head coach Steve Fletcher.

Rider University senior Chris Coles and sophomore Dylan Korn have qualified for the NCAA Diving Zone Qualifying Meet in both the one-meter and the three-meter dives.

Mike Kessler of the wrestling team, and Priscilla Modrov of the swimming & diving team, were named the Rider University Athletes of the Month for all competition in January.

In the final dual meet of the season, the Broncs set three Coppola Pool records and swept Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference rival Iona. The Broncs will now prepare for the MAAC Championships in February. “The win gave the women some confidence going into MAACs,” said Rider head coach Steve Fletcher.  “Both teams are performing very well for this time of year, in our final preparation for championships.”

The Broncs split their meet at Lafayette Wednesday. For Rider head coach Steve Fletcher, it was a bit of a homecoming, returning to his alma mater. “It brings back a lot of fond memories being in this building again,” said Fletcher, who set Lafayette team records while competing there.  “It is a cool feeling going back to your alma mater.”

Rider University sophomore Dylan Korn (Hawthorne, N.Y./Westlake) was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Diver of the Week for all competition January 17-23.

Whether it is helping students in a classroom, or helping his teammates win a conference championship, Rider junior Eric McFerin wants to help, wants to make a difference. “I’ve wanted to be a teacher for some time now,” said McFerin, a junior Elementary Education/Psychology major from Columbus, OH (Upper Arlington), “either Special Education or Elementary. I like to help people and know that I made a difference.”

For most competitive athletes, it is all about the competition. The thrill of victory.  Not for Rider’s Andy French. “It’s weird. For most people who swim, the favorite part is the meet,” said French, “but for me, the training is the favorite part, getting prepared for the last meet of the season, the Championships.”

The Broncs swept Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference rival Loyola Saturday at the Coppola Pool. “I’m very pleased on how we performed today, with two conference wins,” said head coach Steve Fletcher. “We’re just coming back from the training trip, the most intense period of training of the year, and our performances this past week following the trip are better than the times after last year’s trip. That is a real positive indicator of how our championship performances will be.”

The Rider men’s team spilt with Rutgers and Seton Hall, and the Rider women lost to both Rutgers and Seton Hall at Rutgers Wednesday. “Rutgers is an outstanding team, and we competed well with them,” said Rider head coach Steve Fletcher.

The Rider University men’s and women’s swimming & diving teams competed at the Rutgers Super Splash 2005, hosted by Rutgers University this weekend with the hopes that the schedule planning now will work to perfection come February.  Swim a three day mentally and physically exhausting meet against top teams now and gauge where you are in your respective events.  And by the way, the conference championships, again against top competition are a three day, exhausting event.  Plan now and it will be like you’ve been there before.

The quick facts say three.  Only three seniors graduated from the 2004-05 men’s swim team.  A really small number in comparison to say 10 or 15.  But the three seniors that graduated, Bobby DeSandre, Sam Engle and Brad Lacey left some big shoes or fins if you insist to fill for the team.

Led by the Modrov siblings, the Broncs split their meet with La Salle and Delaware Saturday, with the men defeating Delaware and the women defeating La Salle.
November 15, 2005 - Rosenbluth / Korn Honored by the MAAC

Josh Rosenbluth and Dylan Korn of the Rider University swimming & diving team have been honored by the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Rosenbluth was named the Swimmer of the Week, and Korn was named the Diver of the Week, for all competition November 8-14.

The Broncs swept Lehigh and lost to host Penn on Saturday. “We stood up to a tough Ivy League team,” said Rider head coach Steve Fletcher.  “It was our women’s first win over Lehigh since I’ve been here, and it was the narrowest loss to Penn by our men.”

Freshman Josh Rosenbluth (Lawrenceville, N.J./Lawrence) of the Rider men’s swimming & diving team and junior Courtney Clark (Broomall, Pa./Cardinal O'Hara) of the Rider women’s swimming & diving were named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference male and female swimmer’s of the week for competition October 31-November 6.

The Broncs split a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference meet with Marist Saturday. The Rider men ended Marist’s streak of 60 consecutive dual meet victories over MAAC opponents, and defeated the Red Foxes for the first time since 1994. the Rider women had their narrowest loss ever to Marist.  “Things went perfect today, they couldn’t have gone better,” said Rider head coach Steve Fletcher.  “That was a great win for our men’s team, and a great effort by our women.”

Dan Burgess, a senior on the Rider University swimming & diving team, was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Week for all contests October 17-23.

The Broncs began the 2005-06 season by splitting a dual meet with UMBC Saturday. “Today was a surprise,” said head coach Steve Fletcher.  “Last year they beat us pretty good. UMBC wins their league almost every year. We put them on the schedule four years ago to make it more competitive, and now it looks like we’re catching up to them.”
