Rider at Mercer Duals

LAWRENCEVILLE—The Broncs split with The College of New Jersey at the Mercer Duals, held at the Lawrenceville School Sunday. The Rider men defeated TCNJ 92-91, and the Rider women lost 98-77. “That is the first time we’ve beaten them on the men’s side,” said Rider coach Rob Pasquariello, but the team scores to me was inconsequential.  We were looking for really good performances and we got them, with IC4A and ECAC qualifiers and school records. We really did well today.”

For the Rider women, senior Ashley Miller (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) broke the Rider record in the long jump (18’4.25”) and placed second in the triple jump (36’3”).  Junior Katie O’Connor (Forked River/Lacey Twp.) tied the Rider record and qualified for the ECAC Championships in the high jump (5’7”) and placed second in the 55m hurdles (8.69). “Both of them are way up on performance list in MAAC,” Pasquariello said.

For the men junior David Payne (Neptune) won the 55m (6.45) and again qualified for the IC4As, and freshman Anthony Parillo (South River, N.J./South River) won the long jump with an IC4A qualifying distance of 23’3.5”.

Also for the Rider women, freshman Tabatha Haskins (Medford/Shawnee) won the triple jump (37’3”) and the 55m hurdles (8.64), senior Krystal Daniels (Brooklyn, N.Y./South Shore) won the shot put (41’3.75”) and senior Margaret Shipman (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) won the wt. throw (45’4.5”) and placed second in the shot put (40’5”).

Sophomore John Smith (Cliffwood Beach, N.J./Matawan) won the 5,000m (15:24.40), senior Adam Kucinski (Erial, N.J./Highland Regional) qualified for the IC4A and placed second in the pole vault (13’6”) and placed second with an IC4A qualifying distance of 23’2.75” in the long jump.

Sophomore Jeff Stead (Fairless Hills, Pa./Pennsbury) won the mile (4:16.81), junior Doug Beck (Branchburg/Somerville) won the wt. throw (54’3.25”) and shot put (50'0.75"), sophomore Randy Nixon (Manorville, NY/West Hampton) won the 55m hurdles (7.77) and placed second in the 200m (22.38) and freshman Tim Cook (Glassboro) won the high jump (6’4”).  Sophomore Paul Matuszak (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) placed second in the 3000m (8:53.97), junior Danny Enck (Lititz, Pa./Warwick ) placed second ion the wt. throw (52’10.75”) and freshman Tom Planer (Cranford) placed second in the high jump (6’2”).

Senior Carla Wynter (Roselle, N.J./Abraham Clarke) won the 55m (7.42) and placed second in the 400m (58.97) and junior Allyson Angelo (Brick, N.J./Red Bank Catholic) placed second in the pole vault (10’).

The men’s 4 x 400 relay of senior Ayotunde Owodunni (Sicklerville, N.J./Highland Regional), senior Jay Hill (Matawan, N.J./St. John Vianney), Payne and Parillo came in first (3:26.33).

“As far as scoring goes we didn’t compete in every event, so that is a bit misleading,” Pasquariello said. “It was a very good day.”

Rider competes again at the 168th Street armory in new York City February 10 against Lafayette.
