LAWRENCEVILLE—The Broncs lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game to Siena Sunday. “We have to continue to fight and make some progress,” said Rider assistant coach Brian Johnson.
Siena (10-11, 6-6 MAAC) led 20-14 before going on an 8-0 run to take a 28-14 lead, and Siena led 41-23 at half time.
Rider (2-19, 1-11 MAAC) led 9-8 before Siena went on a 12-2 run, six points by Laura Menty, to take a 20-11 lead mid-way through the first half. Menty finished with 18 points and six rebounds.
In the second half Siena led 47-33 before going on a 13-0 run, six points by Lauren Surber, to take a 60-33 lead with nine minutes left to play. Surber finished with 15 points. “We wanted to pressure the ball, but they got a lot of shots in the paint," said Johnson. “We started to scramble and it got out of hand.”
For the Broncs, junior Kara Borel (East Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) had 12 points and seven rebounds. Senior Christine Catalanotto (Flushing, NY/Christ the King) added nine points. “Kara is a bit under the weather but gutted it out today,” said Johnson. “A bit of a sick bug is going through the team.”
Also for Siena, Whitney Cave added a ‘double-double’ with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
“Everybody is going to pound the ball inside on us, and we know that coming in,” said Johnson. “We need to do a better job helping out inside.”
Siena out-rebounded Rider 46-23. “We need to get a little tougher on the boards and do a better job rebounding,” Johnson said.
Rider travels to Loyola Friday.
