Field Hockey Honored for Highest Team GPA - Fall 05 Semester

For the Fall 2005 semester the Rider Field Hockey team compiled the highest team grade point average of the 20 varsity teams at Rider, with a combined semester GPA of 3.281.

November 14, 2005 - Bertos All-Region

Courtney Bertos, a senior on the Rider University field hockey team, was named to the Second Team National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I All-Mid-Atlantic Region. This is the second consecutive year Bertos has been a Second Team All-Region selection.

Tricia Crotty of the field hockey team, and John Smith of the cross country team, have been named the Rider University Athletes of the Month for October.
October 29, 2005 - Sacred Heart 1 Rider 0 (NEC Finals)

Too bad it was an odd numbered year.  Rider won NEC field hockey championships in 2000, 2002 and 2004, advancing to the NCAAs all three years.  In 2001, 2003, and 2005, however, Rider won the NEC regular season title, but finished runner-up in the championship tournament.

Freshman Tricia Crotty (Lewistown, PA/Indian Valley) scored two goals to lead Rider to a come-from-behind victory over Fairfield in the Northeast Conference Championship Tournament semi-finals.  “I can’t remember ever being down two goals and coming back to win,” said Rider head coach Lori Hussong, the NEC Coach of the Year.

Four members of the Rider University field hockey team were honored by the Northeast Conference at the Championship Tournament banquet Thursday night, and head coach Lori Hussong was named the NEC Coach of the Year.  Freshman Tricia Crotty was named the NEC Rookie of the Year.

The NEC’s Alison Robbins recently had the opportunity to speak with Rider field hockey player Courtney Bertos. Bertos is a four-time first team all-NEC selection, including being selected Rookie of the Year in her freshman campaign. This season, Bertos currently has 20 points (6 goals, 8 assists), which ties her for fifth in the conference.

The Rider field hockey team won its third Northeast Conference regular season title on Tuesday with a victory at Monmouth. Now it will seek it fourth NEC Championship.  Under sixth-year head coach Lori Hussong, however, Rider has never won both the regular season and championship tournament titles in the same season. “I hope we didn’t jinx the tournament with the win today,” Hussong joked Tuesday.

Rider sophomore Stephanie Walker was named the Northeast Conference field hockey Player of the Week, and freshman Tricia Crotty was named the NEC Rookie of the Week for all games played October 17-23.

It is customary to honor the graduating seniors prior to the final home game of the season.  On Sunday, the Rider field hockey team did just that, but was hoping it would not be the last home game. “There was a lot of emotion today,” said senior Courtney Bertos (Rockaway, NJ /Morris Knolls).  “We were hoping we’d be back to host, and we pulled it out.”  The Broncs clinched the top seed and will host the upcoming Northeast Conference Championship tournament after defeating Quinnipiac.

Sophomore Stephanie Walker (Lyman, ME/Massabesic) scored two goals, her second consecutive two-goal game, to lead Rider to a non-conference win over Lehigh Wednesday. “Walk played great tonight,” said Rider head coach Lori Hussong.  “She moved well to the ball and created a lot of scoring opportunities.”

The Broncs saw their five-game winning streak snapped at Lafayette Wednesday night. “We controlled the first 15 minutes of the game, and we played very well the last 18 minutes of the game,” said Rider head coach Lori Hussong, “but the middle was ugly.”

Tricia Crotty of Lewistown, PA, a freshman on the Rider University field hockey team, was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week for all games played October 3-9.

Poor weather and the relocation to a turf field did not dampen the Broncs’ moods as they picked up their fifth consecutive win by shutting out St. Francis-PA in a Northeast Conference game on Sunday.

And a freshman shall lead the way.  With all of the pressure of a home conference game, playing the preseason conference favorite with no margin for error in the Northeast Conference standings, Rider freshman Tricia Crotty (Lewistown, PA) did what the coaches told her to do.

The key for a goaltender to be able to win a lot of games is not to make a lot of saves, but rather to not have to make a lot of saves. That’s been the case for Rider junior goalkeeper Krysta Bearish (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh), who won Sunday for the 39th time, setting a new career mark, as Rider defeated Sacred Heart in a Northeast Conference game.
September 30, 2005 - Rider 4 Siena 1

Senior Courtney Bertos (Rockaway, NJ /Morris Knolls) scored twice and added an assist to lead Rider to a Northeast Conference victory at Siena Friday.  The victory was career win number 73 for head coach Lori Hussong, setting a new Rider record for victories. “We were out there to get this win for Coach today,” said Bertos.  “She’s a phenomenal person and a great coach. She pours her heart and soul into this game, into this team, and is very deserving of the career win record.”
