Columbia University 18, Rider University 12

LAWRENCEVILLE—The Broncs won four bouts in a loss to Columbia Saturday.  Columbia (4-4) won the first three bouts to take a 9-0 lead. “Columbia is a solid team,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor.  “They’ve had a pretty good year. They won the first three weights, and that surprised me. I thought we’d win two of them, and that hurt us.”

For Rider (8-5-1), freshman Mike Kessler (Randallstown, Md./Owings Mills), sophomore Doug Umbehauer (Shamong/Lenape), junior Ryan Cunningham (Cherry Hill West) and sophomore T. J. Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff), currently ranked 19th in the nation, won their bouts.

“Columbia is a solid team with good balance,” Taylor said. “We knew they’d be tough.  I just figured we’d win one or two of those first three. We needed to come out better. Sometime that just happens. If we win just one of the three it’s a tie match

We don’t usually lose the first three and we did tonight. That pretty much told the story.”

Rider has yet to field its best line up due to injuries. “We still have a few key people in the stands watching,” Taylor said. “We need to get some wrestlers out of the stands and back onto the mat.”

The Broncs host Clarion February 4 on Hall of Fame Day. Former All-American Francis Dunn will be one of five Broncs inducted into the Rider Athletics Hall of Fame that day. “We’re looking to get Back on track against a solid team like Clarion next Saturday,” Taylor said. “That’s the game plan.”
