LAWRENCEVILLE—In the final dual meet of the season, the Broncs set three Coppola Pool records and swept Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference rival Iona. The Broncs will now prepare for the MAAC Championships in February. “The win gave the women some confidence going into MAACs,” said Rider head coach Steve Fletcher. “Both teams are performing very well for this time of year, in our final preparation for championships.”
For the Rider women (5-7) freshman Priscilla Modrov (Smithtown, NY/Hauppauge) broke a pair of Rider Pool records, in the 500 free (5:04.75) and the 1,000 free (10:24.31). “Priscilla was the swimmer of the day,” said Fletcher.
For the Rider men (9-3), the free relay team of Dan Burgess, Eric McFerin, Brandon Modrov and Peter Starr finished in a pool record time of 1:25.92.
“It is always nice to have Rider swimmers hold the pool records,” said Fletcher. “It’s our pool, we should have the pool records.”
But it was senior day, and not even two record-breaking performances from a freshman could steal the limelight away from senior Kristen Enoch (Hatboro, Pa./Upper Moreland), who won the 200 breaststroke (2:32.63) and swam on the winning 200 medley relay (1:51.84).
“Kristen is a senior co-captain who missed some significant time this year with health issues,” said Fletcher. “She did well today, and her times are coming back down after having her training interrupted.”
“I was out for a while with some health problems, but I finally got cleared for the last three meets,” Enoch said. “When they recognized the seniors before the final home meet I really didn’t think I would get upset, but I just lost it,” Enoch said emotionally. “I’ve spent four years here and our senior class is part of the transition class. When I came here this program was never supposed to be the way it is now, it is so unbelievable how far we’ve come under coach Fletcher.”
As a freshman Enoch set both a Rider and a MAAC record in the 100 breaststroke. The MAAC record has since been broken by an NCAA qualifying swimmer, but Enoch still holds the Bronc record.
“It was really tough for me to sit out for much of the season, but I tried to stay positive and kept saying to myself ‘I’m going to get through this.’ My main goal was to get cleared and be able to swim in the conference meet. That’s what I really care about. Swimming is a different sport in that the dual meet season doesn’t really mean that much. It’s all a matter of how much work you put in that determines how you do in the conference meet.”
“For the next 20 days we’re just training and preparing for championships,” said Fletcher. “I’m very pleased with the season, and I couldn’t be prouder of these athletes. Being a swimmer or diver is not an easy lifestyle. It’s extremely hard to be a committed diver or swimmer in our program and be a normal college student. They maintained the commitment level, held the standards of the program in a high spot. They’ve laid a good foundation for the future.”
