FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Women’s College Basketball

Marist College 75, Rider University 49

POUGHKEEPSIE , N.Y. —The Red Foxes jumped out to a 16-2 lead in the first five minutes of the game and defeated the Broncs 75-49 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game Friday night at Marist.

Freshman Danielle Costantino (Norristown, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) and sophomore Janele Henderson (Brooklyn, N.Y./Bishop Loughlin) each finished with 12 points for Rider.

Rider junior Kara Borel (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Stroudsburg) compiled her sixth career ‘double-double’ with 10 points and 10 rebounds.   Borel also added three steals.

Trailing by 14, Rider (2-16, 1-8 MAAC) went on a 10-2 run, six points from Costantino, to cut the Marist (13-5, 8-1 MAAC) lead to six with nine minutes left in the first half.

“Danielle has been coming off the bench because we’ve needed a spark off the bench early in our games,” said head coach Tori Harrison.  “She (Danielle) comes from a winning program and we need to get everyone on that same page.”

Marist led 18-12 before going on a 13-1 run to take a 31-13 lead at the five minute mark, and led 43-21 at the half.   The 43 points for Marist was the highest first half point total since the 2004 MAAC Championship game against Canisius when the Red Foxes advanced to the NCAA Championship Tournament.

Holding a 50-29 with 16:08 left in the game, Marist went on a 15-4 run, to lead 65-33 with 7:43 left.

The Red Foxes have won 13 of their last 14 games.   Marist has won its last 13 MAAC regular season home games.

“We as a team and as coaches need to come in day in and day out and do the things that we know will make us successful,” Harrison added.  “The kids have to stay positive and we have to keep encouraging them but the encouragement will only work as much as the kids accept it.”

Rider hosts MAAC rival Fairfield on Sunday at 2:00pm as part of National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
