PHILADELPHIA, PA—Whether it is helping students in a classroom, or helping his teammates win a conference championship, Rider junior Eric McFerin wants to help, wants to make a difference. “I’ve wanted to be a teacher for some time now,” said McFerin, a junior Elementary Education/Psychology major from Columbus, OH (Upper Arlington), “either Special Education or Elementary. I like to help people and know that I made a difference.”
On Saturday McFerin made a difference helped Rider swept Drexel in swimming and diving. “We swept Drexel last year for the first time ever, so now it’s two in a row,” said Rider head coach Steve Fletcher.
McFerin won the 50 free (21.56) and the 100 free (46.88), and swam on the winning 400 medley relay. “McFerin is swimming fast right now, and currently has the top times in the MAAC in the 50 and 100,” said Fletcher.
“It was a good day,” McFerin said. “As far as having one of the top times in the MAAC, it’s good to have a high seed time, but you still have to do it on championship day.” Last year on championship day McFerin helped Rider break the MAAC Championship record in the 200 medley, and also swam on the winning 400 free relay. “My freshman year we won the championship as a team, and that is my fondest memory of MAACs,” said McFerin. “We put a lot of training in this year, and hopefully it will pay off at the right time. Personally, I’ve been swimming faster than I have in my career, so now I have to swim my best at the right time, at the MAACs.”
Also for the Rider men, junior Andy French (Richfield, MN) won the 1000 free (9:56.34) and the 200 butterfly (2:01.28), and sophomore Dylan Korn (Hawthorne, N.Y./Westlake) broke the Rider record in the 1-meter dive with a score of 294.45.
