FAIRFAX, VA—The Broncs swept host George Mason and Wagner on the first day of the two-day CAA Duals. “Things pretty much went as expected,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor.
For Rider (5-4, 3-0 CAA), junior Joe Maroney (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) compiled a tech fall. “Maroney had a nice win,” said Taylor.
Sophomore T. J. Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff), currently ranked 18th in the nation, won by a major decision, and sophomore Mike Palma (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson) won by a major decision against Mason.
Sophomore Ryan Smith (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Olmsted Falls), sophomore Zack Cunliffe (Farmingdale, N.J./Howell), and freshman Mike Kessler (Randallstown, Md./Owings Mills) also won twice for Rider.
“Kessler beat a good kid and beat him solid,” said Taylor. Kessler, ranked fourth in the CAA, beat the second ranked 149 in the CAA 5-2. “That was a nice win for Mike. He did a good job,” said Taylor.
On Saturday Rider takes on Binghamton, Old Dominion and James Madison at Mason.
