LAWRENCEVILLE--The Broncs wouldn’t give up, out-scoring Loyola 9-4 in the last two minutes, and 14-8 over the final seven minutes of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference loss to Loyola Thursday. “The last few minutes we played like we really wanted this game, but it was too little too late,” said Rider head coach Tori Harrison.

With the score tied at 6-6, Loyola (9-7, 4-3 MAAC) went on a 17-4 run, eight points by Jackie Valderas, to take a 23-10 lead, and Loyola led 28-14 at the half. Valderas finished with 10 points and nine rebounds.  “We told the players that because we beat Loyola last year they were going to be gunning for us, and they were,” said Harrison.

Last year Rider defeated Loyola in the first round of the MAAC Championship Tournament, ending the Greyhounds’ season.

The loss Thursday ended Rider’s unbeaten streak at home since the New Year.

Sophomore Janele Henderson (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Loughlin) scored Rider’s final nine points of the game, making three three-pointers, and finished with a game-high 15 points.

Loyola out-scored Rider 8-2 to start the second half, six points by Jill Glessner, taking a 36-16 lead, and maintained that lead throughout the second half. Glessner finished with 14 points.

Rider (2-14, 1-6 MAAC) junior Kara Borel (East Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) compiled a ‘double-double’ with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while adding four assists and three steals. It was her second ‘double-double’ of the season.

Rider freshman Shaunice Parker (Waldorf, MD/West Lake) compiled 11 points and eight rebounds off the bench. “We look for Shaunice to come in off the bench and give us a spark, and that’s what she did again tonight,” said Harrison. “What we needed tonight though is a spark from our starters.”

After scoring 29 points in the last two games, Rider junior Monica Welborn (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) made just one of 10 shots from the field, finishing with two points.  “If Monica misses her first few shots, this is what happens,” said Harrison. “When she makes a few early, she gains confidence and is usually in for a good night. We need her to score early for us.”

Rider hosts Manhattan Saturday afternoon.
