HAMPTON, VA—The Broncs lost to North Carolinaon the second day of the 2006 Virginia Duals Saturday at the Hampton Coliseum. “We had a lot of matches that we were capable of winning, we just didn’t,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor. “We wrestled hard, but we didn’t wrestle well.”
Junior Ryan Cunningham (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) collected the only victory for Rider (3-4). “Ryan is getting stronger every week and is doing a nice job for us,” said Taylor. “His only loss down here was to the West Virginia kid who was a returning All-American. He has a good work ethic and doesn’t get down when things don’t go his way.”
The Broncs went 1-2 in the VA Duals this year, defeating The Citadel while losing to West Virginia on Friday. “They are all good wrestlers down here,” said Taylor. “It depends on the day. Yesterday we had guys beat better wrestlers than who they lost to today. It depends on the day.”
“Carolina is a very balanced team,” said Taylor. “They have a good kid at every weight. Rider had defeated UNC at the 2004 Virginia Duals. “We beat NC here the last time we saw them when we only had eight in the line up, and they remembered that,” said Taylor. “They had a lot of incentive coming in. They wanted to get us back and they did.”
Rider competes in the CAA Duals January 20-21 at George Mason.
