PHILADELPHIA, PA—The Broncs began the Colonial Athletic Association portion of their schedule with a victory at Drexel Tuesday, winning seven of the 10 bouts. “We wrestled better tonight,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor. “Drexel is a good team, so this is a good win for us.”

Sophomore Zack Cunliffe (Farmingdale, N.J./Howell) began the match with a major decision, and sophomore Mike Palma (Lake Hopatcong, N.J./Jefferson) pinned Greg Jensen to give Rider a 10-0 lead. 

Sophomore 197 T. J. Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff), freshman Mike Kessler (Randallstown, Md./Owings Mills), junior Ryan Cunningham (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West), junior Joe Maroney (Bensalem, Pa./Bensalem) and sophomore Tyler Rees (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern Regional) also won for the Broncs.

“Our intensity was higher tonight,” said Taylor. “The kids responded to the loss to Bloomsburg and wrestled tough tonight. They didn’t like the way we competed at Bloomsburg.”

Freshman Doug Umbehauer (Shamong, N.J./Lenape) sprained his ankle during his bout and was forced to withdraw. “Doug inured the ankle early and we pulled him when he couldn’t move well enough to compete,” said Taylor.

Rider competes in the Virginia Duals this weekend in Hampton, VA.
