Manhattan College 59, Rider University 34

RIVERDALE, NY--The Broncs traveled to the Bronx for a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference at Manhattan Thursday.  Rider (1-10, 0-3 MAAC) scored the first four points of the game and led 12-11.  Once we got the ‘W’ against Monmouth and got off to the good start tonight, we thought ‘hey, it’s a new year and things are going to be different,’” said Rider assistant coach Sharon Gittens.

Manhattan (5-7, 2-1 MAAC) then out-scored Rider 23-2 over the final 12:49 of the first half to take a 34-14 lead at intermission, and went on to win by 25 points. Rider went 11:21 in the first half without scoring. “We suffered from a rash of turnovers and they seemed to score on every turnover we committed,” said Gittens. “We dug ourselves a bit of a hole, scoring just 14 points in the first half.”

Rider junior Monica Welborn (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) made her first five shots from the field and finished with 10 points. Sophomore Janele Henderson (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Loughlin) added eight points.

For Manhattan, Kymesha Alston had 12 points, seven rebounds and five blocked shots.

Rider travels to Fairfield for a MAAC game Saturday. “We’re looking for a new day in Bridgeport,” said Gittens.
