Sacred Heart University 83, Rider University 49

LAWRENCEVILLE--After 15 days off due to exams and the Holidays, the Broncs lost to Sacred Heart Thursday. “The second half was better, in that we scored, but we totally lost our focus early on,” said Rider head coach Tori Harrison. “The time off contributed to our play, as well as our youth.”

Sacred Heart (7-2) held a 15-9 lead before out-scoring Rider 27-2 to take a 42-11 lead at half time. “Sacred Heart is a good team,” said Harrison. “I don’t think they are 34 points better than us, but they are a good team.”

Rider (0-9) trailed 53-15 four minutes into the second half before going on a 20-5 run, eight points by freshman Danielle Costantino (Norristown, PA/Archbishop Carroll), to cut the lead to 58-35 with 10:45 left to play. Costantino finished with a career-high 18 points off the bench, 16 in the second half. “Danielle always works hard,” said Harrison.  “She was our spark in the second half.”

Rider trailed 62-40 with 8:45 left to play, but could get no closer.

For Sacred Heart, Amanda Pape compiled a ‘double-double’ with 24 points and 11 rebounds, while Nicole Rubino added 16 points.

For Rider, junior Kara Borel (East Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) added a ‘double-double’ of 11 points and 10 rebounds. “Kara played well,” said Harrison.  “Her body language was much better in the second half.”

Freshman Shaunice Parker (Waldorf, MD/West Lake) added eight points and 10 rebounds. “Shaunice can dominate, and will in the future,” said Harrison.

Rider hosts Monmouth January 2 at 7:00 pm.
