Umbehauer, Fisch in Quarter-Finals

GREENSBORO, NC—The Broncs are competing Thursday and Friday at the Southern Scuffle, hosted by the University of North Carolina-Greensboro.

Freshman 174 Doug Umbehauer (Shamong, N.J./Lenape) defeated Luke Hogle of Cornell 5-4 in the third round to advance to the quarter-finals against the third seed, Gabe Dretsch of Minnesota. After a first round bye, Umbehauer defeated Darius Caldwell of the Citadel 4-2 in the second round. “Doug was losing before a last second take down to beat the kid from Cornell,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor.   “Doug is wrestling really well right now.”

Junior Don Fisch (Williamstown/Delsea Regional), wrestling unattached, also reached the quarter-finals, winning twice after a first-round bye.  Fisch defeated Nick Orio of The Citadel 14-2 and Orlando Perez of Oregon State 12-4, to reach the quarter-finals.

Sophomore 197 T. J. Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) lost to the sixth seed from Lehigh, Matt Cassidy, 9-5 in the first round. In the consolations, Morrison pinned Ben Rings of Kent State in 3:55 and then defeated Mitch Kuhlman of Minnesota 9-5. “TJ had a tough draw in the first round, but wrestled back well and is still in a good position to place high,” said Taylor.

In the consolations at 157, junior Ryan Cunningham (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) defeated Derik Neitz of the Citadel 16-3 and won again by medical forfeit before defeating Jake Yost of Chattanooga 6-4.

In the 165 consolations, junior Joe Maroney (Bensalem, Pa/Bensalem) defeated Ben Fiacco of Old Dominion 5-3, Dan Peterson of Chattanooga 9-6, and Brett Arand of Oregon State 10-4.

In the 149 consolations, freshman Mike Kessler (Randallstown, Md./Owings Mills) defeated Mike Reisch of Cornell 3-1, Dan Shvartsman of Duke 3-1, and defeated Joel Ahern of Navy 6-5.

Senior 165 Chris Marold (Mendham) was pinned by Matt Pell of Missouri in the third round. Marold won 7-2 in the first round and pinned Anthony Spooner of Ohio in 2:00 in the second round. In the consolations, Marold lost to Jason McGee of Kent State 8-2.

Competing unattached, 184 Mike Miller lost 4-2 to Alex Clemsen of Edinboro in the third round. Miller won 8-5 in the first round and defeated Kyle Higgins of Campbell 14-2 in the second round. In the consolations, Miller lost to Brian Cesear of Ohio 9-7.  “That was the first action of the year for Miller, who is red-shirting this season, and he had a nice showing,” said Taylor.
