PHILADELPHIA, Pa.--The Broncs experienced a lot of Payne on Sunday, suffering from a severe case of Ricketts. 6’1” junior Crista Ricketts compiled 25 points and 10 rebounds, and senior guard Davineia Payne added 21 points and seven rebounds to lead La Salle to victory.
La Salle(3-3) led 13-12 mid-way through the first half before going on a 14-3 run, six points by Crista Ricketts, to take a 27-15 lead, and the Explorers led 31-23 at the half. Rickets scored the first six points of the second half to give La Salle a 37-23 lead.
“When you go on scoring lulls, you are not going to win,” said Rider head coach Tori Harrison. “We couldn’t score to start the second half. We’ve got to find someone to give us a spark in situations like that. This is a young team that works hard. With time and experience we’ll be alright.”
For the young Broncs (0-5), freshman Shaunice Parker (Waldorf, MD/West Lake) came in off the bench to lead Rider with 13 points and seven rebounds. “Shaunice played well,” said Harrison, “both on the boards and offensively.” “It was a competitive game today,” said Parker. “It seemed we were more into the game, and I think we played better. We’re young, but I think that’s a good thing. We get to grow together and when we gain the experience we need to compete on this level we’ll be very good.”
Sophomore Janele Henderson (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Loughlin) added 13 points. “Janelle hardly played last year and she has been playing a lot of minutes and is playing well for us,” Harrison said.
Junior Kara Borel (East Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) added eight points and nine rebounds for the Broncs. “I was happy to see Kara crash the boards again,” Harrison said.
Rider hosts Canisius in the first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game of the season Friday, December 9. “It doesn’t get any easier,” said Parker.
