FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Rider at Rutgers Super Splash - Day Two
Men 6th of 10, Women 7th of 9

PISCATAWAY--The quick facts say three.  Only three seniors graduated from the 2004-05 men’s swim team.  A really small number in comparison to say 10 or 15.  But the three seniors that graduated, Bobby DeSandre, Sam Engle and Brad Lacey left some big shoes or fins if you insist to fill for the team.

Competing at the Rutgers Super Splash, against some of the top competition on the East Coast, you may think that the men’s team is treading water with the loss of those three seniors, some of the best swimmers in the history of Rider Aquatics.

“The younger swimmers have had to step up this year,” said sophomore Peter Starr.  “Today, we (the men’s and women’s teams) did very well, with some posting individual bests in their respective events.  It was a good day for everyone.”

Starr, from Boyertown, Pa., finished sixth in the 100 back with a time of 53.52.

The men's team is sixth of 10 after day two with 242 points and the women's team is seventh of nine with 155 points.  Rutgers is in first place in both the men's and women's competitions.

For the women’s team on Saturday, freshman Priscilla Modrov (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) was fifth in the 400 IM (4:30.17).

For the men’s team, junior Brandon Modrov (Smithtown, N.Y./Hauppauge) was fifth in the 400 IM (4:03.79) and sixth in the 100 breast (59.24) with senior Dan Burgess (Greeley, Colo./Union Colony Prep) placing sixth in the 200 free (1:42.38).

Also for the men, junior Andy French (Richfield, Minn./Richfield Senior) placed 13th in the 400 IM (4:11.54), freshman Frank Ippolito (Hillsborough, N.J./Hillsborough) was 20th in the 100 breast (1:01.55) and sophomore Matt Bauer (Lansdale, Pa./North Penn) was 25th in the 100 breast (1:02.36).

Also for the women’s team, freshman Ericka Kriedel (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield) placed 13th in the 100 back (1:01.52), senior Stephanie Kraml (Princeton, N.J./WW P-South) was 14th in the 100 back (1:02.37), senior Jen Feenstra (Reading, Pa./Governor Mifflin) was 16th in the 100 fly (1:01.17), junior Adrianne Glasgow (Davidsonville, Md./Saint Mary's) was 17th in the 400 IM (4:47.51), sophomore Stephanie Cosentino (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame Academy) was 20th in the 200 free (2:00.00) and freshman Kelsey Tokar (Frederick, Md./Gov. Thomas Johnson) was 27th in the 200 free (2:02.11).

The men’s 200 medley relay of Starr, Burgess, junior Eric McFerin (Columbus, Ohio/Upper Arlington) and Modrov finished fifth (1:36.04) with the 800 free relay of Burgess, Modrov, senior Trevor Vernal (Milford, Conn./Notre Dame) and French placing ninth (7:08.51).

The women’s 200 medley relay of Kriedel, Modrov, Feenstra and Cosentino placed eighth (1:53.71) with the 800 free relay of Modrov, Cosentino, Tokar and freshman Kristen Warwick (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales Academy) placing ninth (8:02.94).

Scheduling a meet that includes opponents such as Columbia, American, La Salle, TCNJ, Drexel and host Rutgers allow the Broncs to get an immediate yard stick as to where they are in their times and how much better they need to become for the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championships in mid February.

“This weekend helps us get more experience swimming against better competition,” added Starr.  “I swam a season best time today but I also see where we are as a team, what we can accomplish and what we have to do in future meets.  We didn’t lose that many swimmers but we lost a lot of leadership.  The younger swimmers are stepping up into the leadership roles and that’s what we need to be successful.”

Competition concludes Sunday with youth leading the way.
