Rider 5th at Mat Town
Umbehauer Champion
LOCK HAVEN, PA—The Broncs placed fifth of eight teams at the 30th annual Mat Town USA Invitational, hosted by Lock Haven University Saturday. 16th ranked Indiana won the tournament. Rider brought eight wrestlers and seven placed, led by freshman Doug Umbehauer (Shamong, N.J./Lenape), who won his 174 pound weight class. “We placed seven of eight so I’m pretty happy about that,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor.
Sophomore T. J. Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff) placed third at 197, sophomore Ryan Smith (Olmsted Falls, Ohio/Olmsted Falls) placed third at 125, freshman Mike Kessler (Randallstown, MD/Owings Mills) placed fourth at 149, junior Joe Maroney (Bensalem, PA) placed fourth at 165, sophomore Zack Cunliffe (Farmingdale, N.J./Howell) placed fifth at 133, and senior Chris Marold (Mendham) placed seventh at 165.
In the championship bout at 174, Umbehauer, the top seed, defeated the sixth seed, Marc Bennet of Indiana 4-2. Umbehauer won all four of his bouts. “I like wrestling three or four times in a day in a tournament like this, more than just one match in a dual meet,” said Umbehauer, who red-shirted last year, his first season at Rider. “Sometimes it tough to get warmed up enough for just one match.”
“Doug is very consistent,” said Taylor. “He works real hard and it pays off. He wins a lot because he wears people down.” “I guess that’s what I do best, wear people down," Umbehauer agreed.
Umbehauer had to go overtime to win 8-6 in sudden victory in the quarter-finals over Derrick Morgan of the host Lock Haven team. “They had a big crowd here and he was a tough kid,” Umbehauer said of Morgan. “I needed a takedown at the end and then ride him out.”
In the battle for third place at 197, Morrison, the fourth seed, defeated the fifth seed, Shaun Dee of Oregon, 3-0. Morrison won by fall before losing 9-8 to the top seed, returning All-American Kyle Cerminara of Buffalo in the semi-finals. Morrison collected another fall in the consolations. “T.J.’s only loss was by one point to an All-American,” said Taylor, “so he had a good tournament as well.”
In the battle for third place at 149, Kessler lost 2-1 to the third seed, Andrew Schlaffer of Maryland. Kessler pinned Isaac Knable of Indiana in the consolations.
In the battle for third place at 165, Maroney lost 8-4 to the second seed, Max Dean of Indiana. Maroney, the fifth seed, upset the fourth seed, Robby Gosnell of Old Dominion, 11-8 before losing in the semi-finals to the top seed.
In the battle for third place at 125, Smith, the third seed, pinned the fifth seed, Bryan Lashomb of Old Dominion in 4:29. Smith won his first two bouts before losing 6-5 to the second seed, Obenson Blanc of Lock Haven in the semi-finals. Smith won again in the consolations.
Cunliffe won twice in consolations.
Rider competes at Maryland in a dual meet December 10.
