JERSEY CITY--The Broncs kept their playoff hopes alive with a come-from-behind Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory at Saint Peter’s Sunday. “This was a huge win for us,” said Rider head coach Russ Fager.
Junior Dylan Matlack (Geigertown, PA/Twin Valley) scored twice, including the game winner with just 18 seconds left in the second half. “Dylan had a nice game,” said Fager. “We moved him up front from the midfield and he is a real presence up there,” Fager said of the 6’2”, 195 pound Matlack.
Trailing 1-0, Rider (4-9-4, 3-3-2 MAAC) tied the score at 1-1 with a goal by freshman AJ Parillo (South River) with just 16 second left in the first half. The goal was Parillo’s first collegiate score.
Matlack’s first goal of the game and second of the season tied the score at 2-2 16 minutes into the second half. “That was scored with my left foot,” Matlack said. “I’m right handed, so most defenders play me that way, so I like to use my left as often as possible and today I had a clear shot at the far post.”
The game winner was scored on a header off of a corner kick from freshman Owen Castle (Belford/Middletown North), who also assisted on Parillo’s goal. “Owen’s corner was deflected back to him, and he made a beautiful cross to me and I headed it in,” Matlack said.
Matlack scored on a header in the final two minutes of a MAAC game last year to beat Manhattan 2-1. “He tends to make things happen when we have him up front,” said Fager.
Saint Peter’s (6-9-3, 2-3-2 MAAC) out-shot Rider 15-10, including 9-4 in the first half. Rider junior goalkeeper Dan Riverso (Williamstown) made nine saves. “Dan played great again today,” said Fager. “He stopped two or three break-a-ways.”
Pat Nagawiecki made five saves for Saint Peter’s.
Rider ends the regular season at Loyola November 5. “If we win Saturday and get some help we’re back in the playoffs,” Fager said. “This was an awesome win, because it kept our playoff hopes alive,” said Matlack.
